La Paz
February 5th - La Paz (but not for long)

IT WORKS!!  The radar is ready to go.  Our radar guy,
Fabrizio, came by on Friday and installed it.  Our plan
is to go to Ensendada de Los Muertos (Cove of the
Dead) tomorrow.  The folks wanting to develop
Muertos have renamed it the "Bay of Dreams."  I
guess that is more appealing for the Gringos. Another
example of Marketing people ruining a good thing.

Anyway, from Muertos, we will head to Mazatlan.  The
northerlies are expected to die down today and we
should have nice weather through Friday.  It should
take about 30 hours to get from Muertos to Mazatlan,
which means only one overnight passage.  I am
actually looking forward to it.  Night passages can be
very insightful if there isn't any weather.

We will miss our friends we have met here and look
forward to seeing them again in the late spring.

January 20th - La Paz

Yes, we are still in La Paz.  And, yes, we are still
waiting for the radar to be fixed.  Years ago, David
sold a machine to a marine electrician from La Paz -
Fabrizio.  He has been helping us with the radar since
November.  He ordered a part that took about 6
weeks to get to us.

We had to make a trip to the La Paz airport to retrieve
it.  This entailed hitching a ride with Ray and Jayne
and three large guys in their early 20's (Jayne's two
sons and their friend).  They had borrowed a small
Ford stationwagon type vehicle and David and I
crawled in the back with the luggage and prayed Ray
wouldn't hit too many potholes.  The roads were very
smooth and I guess it was quite a sight to see 7
people get out of that car.  Truly a clown car if there
ever was one.  A cab to the airport costs @ $40.00 so
we decided a little bit of discomfort was worth it.

At the airport, we walked through a dusty field to the
cargo building.  We were instructed to ask for Juan -
who , of course, was not there.  However, once we
brought out Fabrizio's business card, several calls
were made and Juan appeared with our part.

Fabrizio travels a lot and he finally returned to La Paz
replaced the part and, of course, the radar still did not
work.  So the radar is in the shop and we are pining
for the mainland.

We are preparing for our 18th round of 'northers."  It's
been cold and rainy most of the week.  But, we hear
that it was 26 degrees in Ventura and it snowed in
Malibu.  So we are not alone.

We are still having a wonderful time.   La Paz is a
great place to be stuck in.  We are meeting great
people, eating great food and learning a little Spanish
- very little.  Donde esta el pescado?

I borrowed an idea from Andrew Cleveland and
included a recipe page featuring several good recipes
we've collected.

Keep your fingers crossed about the radar.  More to
follow.
