Chamela

We missed Chamela on our trip south, so we were anxious to visit.
Unfortunately just as we were setting anchor the CO2 alarm and the bilge
pump alarm went off.  David determined that the mixing elbow pipe had
ruptured.  There are no PepBoys in Chamela and we were 90 miles south
of Puerto Vallarta.  David called our mechanic Neil and our buddy Jim
(MacGever) and both gave him the same advice use J-B Weld, extreme
tape and beer cans to put the thing back together.  Tim off Hooligan had
a similar problem with his exhaust system and provided moral support via
the single side band radio.  The most valuable advice was that we could
run the engine with this issue.  But, yikes, before the fix water was
gushing out of the pipe!!

Anyway, over two days David carefully applied treatment after treatment
allowing each treatment time to set.  Saturday am we were able to sail out
of the anchorage and we were headed to Puetra Vallarta.  We were able
to sail for a couple of hours but eventually we had to start the engine and
hope for the best.  We also could not stay down below because of
possible CO2 issues.  The fix held with the help of some additional duct
tape applied every other hour or so.  This passage includes passing
Corrientes which is not a lot of fun because of the currents.  We went 90
miles in 31 hours, but we made it.

Our new friend, mechanic Butch, fixed the problem while we were in the
La Cruz Marina.  He said David did a fabulous job of mending the
problem.
Once the engine was fixed, we could
enjoy the wonderful little town of La
Cruz de Huanacaxtle.  Luckily, we
were able to attend the opening
night of the town's festival.  The
festival featured many wonderful
dancers including our favorite,
Lupita, the 10 year daughter of our
friends Jesus and Letty.   Lupita and
19 other children were scheduled to
dance every day for the duration of
the festival.  The festival also
featured many fireworks - going off
at 6:00 am every morning.
The festival also
featured one of our
favorite games.
Throw rocks at
empty beer bottles.
Three rocks for 20
peso.  If you hit a
bottle you get a
beer.  Pretty low
overhead.  David did
get a beer.
